2023 U-23 AFCON: Morocco defeats the Black Meteors 5-1

The Black Meteors from Ghana experienced a heavy defeat against Morocco in their second group match at the ongoing U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

A poor performance in both halves resulted in Ghana losing by a score of 5-1, causing them to drop to third place in Group A after playing two games.

Ghana had a terrible start to the game, conceding two goals within the first 14 minutes of the match. In the sixth minute, the Ghanaian defense became disorganized after the host nation was awarded a corner kick. The corner was taken quickly, leading to Abdessamad Ezzalzouli assisting Amir Richardson for the opening goal of the game.

Ismael Salibari made it two goals in the 14th minute, capitalizing on the Ghanaian defense’s lack of attention. He received a pass from Yanis Begraoui and skilfully lifted the ball over Danland Ibrahim.

In the 29th minute, Begraoui finished off a well-executed team goal, increasing the lead to 3-0 and making it nearly impossible for Ghana to recover. However, Ibrahim Tanko's team pulled one back through Salim Adams, who scored from the rebound after Abdul Fatawu Issahaku's initial shot was blocked.

Just a minute later, the Sporting CP forward had another opportunity to score, but his goal was disallowed as the ball was deemed out of play.

During halftime, Ghana had a chance to regroup, but their hopes were dashed immediately after the break when Ezzalzouli capitalized on a failed clearance by Terry Yegbe and found the back of the net.

The lead was further extended when Morocco took advantage of a failed corner-kick attempt by Ghana. They launched a swift counterattack, leading to Ezzalzouli assisting Begraoui for his second goal of the night, making it 5-1.

In the game's dying moments, Zubairu Ibrahim had an opportunity to make it 5-2 after being set up by Ernest Nuamah, but his shot hit the far post.

Morocco had a sixth goal disallowed for offside during injury time, and the game ended with a final score of 5-1.

In their last group game, Ghana will face Guinea, knowing that anything other than a win will result in their elimination from the competition and the end of their hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
