The Black Stars fire Chris Hughton as head coach while they look for a replacement |
Amidst the quest for a new Coach for the Ghana national football team following the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton, the Ghana Football Association has commenced its search. Hughton's termination occurred on the 23rd of January 2024, a consequence of Ghana's premature exit from the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Taking charge of the Black Stars on the evening of February
12, 2023, Hughton's contract was curtailed due to the team's lackluster
performance under his supervision. The unfortunate elimination from the ongoing
Africa Cup of Nations happened on the 22nd of January 2024, as Ghana concluded
the group stage with a meager two points, securing the third position in Group
B.
In the wake of Hughton's departure, a roster of potential
successors is being contemplated. The candidates under consideration include:
1. Tom Saintfiet
The 50-year-old tactician relinquished his position as coach
of Gambia after their recent group-stage exit in Côte d'Ivoire. This
resignation marked the conclusion of his six-year tenure, during which he
notably steered Gambia to their maiden AFCON appearance in 2021. Known for
exceeding expectations, Saintfiet had earlier coached various African teams,
including Namibia (2008-2010), Zimbabwe (2010), Malawi (2013), and most
recently, The Gambia (2018-2024).
2. Herve Renard
A figure of missed opportunity for Ghanaian football
enthusiasts, Herve Renard played a pivotal role as a physical trainer to Ghana
coach Claude Le Roy at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. Renard later led Zambia
to AFCON glory in 2012, defeating Ghana in the semi-final. His subsequent
triumph with Côte d'Ivoire in 2015 suggests a tactical acumen that could
instigate the much-needed cultural reset for the Black Stars. Renard's recent
acceptance of a €400,000 annual salary to coach France's women's football team
hints at a potential shift in his perceived costliness.
3. Jose Mourinho
Recently available after parting ways with A.S. Roma, the
Special One rejected an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab. Despite his
extensive club coaching experience, Mourinho has not ventured into
international management. The prospect of coaching a vibrant, talented group
led by West Ham star Mohammed Kudus could be a mutually beneficial challenge.
For Ghana, securing a coach of Mourinho's caliber could herald success and
rejuvenate the reputation of both coach and team.
4. Prosper Narteh Ogum
Ogum, well-regarded within Ghana's football circles, boasts
a track record with Ebusua Dwarfs, West Africa Football Academy, and Kotoko.
His reputation as a progressive yet assertive coach who achieves results sets
him apart. Ogum's advantage lies in his deep understanding of Ghanaian
football, and the potential cost savings associated with hiring a local coach
could be a pivotal factor for Ghana's Sports Ministry in making the final
decision. If fiscal considerations weigh heavily, Ogum stands a significant
chance of leading the Black Stars.
